Dinger is a fun, outdoor game similar to horseshoes or corn hole, but played with a disc (frisbee) and two poles with empty cans on top. You and a partner stand behind one of the poles and 1) try to score points by throwing the disc and trying to knock the can off the pole and 2) try to avoid points for your opponent by catching the can and/or disc when it is thrown at your pole. All the while, holding a cold beverage in one hand. The scoring is easy, but the best is when you hit the can directly on…which is called a DINGER!
DINGER RULES
Play Area
- The poles are placed 12 yards apart (a dozen big steps).
- The poles should stick up four feet out of the ground.
- An empty can is placed on top of each pole. If it is windy, add a little water to the cans to weigh then down.
- An ultimate disc is the best to use (175 gram disc).
Game Play
- Two people are typically on a team. They both stand behind a pole.
- The object is to be the first team to score 21 points. You must win by 2 points.
- You make points by throwing the disc and trying to knock the can off your opponent’s pole. You can either hit the pole or the can directly on (A DINGER!) to knock the can to the ground. You score points when the can hits the ground and/or your opponent does not catch the frisbee. Only the throwing team scores points.
- Therefore, another object is to play defense at your pole and 1) catch the disc, 2) catch the can if it gets knocked off, to AVOID points given to your opponent.
Scoring Points
- When receiving team does not catch the disc = 1 point for throwing team
- When receiving team does not catch the can = 1 point for throwing team
- When the disc hits the can directly on (A DINGER!) = 3 points for throwing team
- When receiving team goaltends (see below) = 2 points for throwing team
BUT, if receiving team catches the disc = 0 points for throwing team
AND/OR, if receiving team catches the can before it hits the ground = 0 points for throwing team
Sample Scoring Situations
Throwing team knocks the can off by hitting the pole. Receiving team does NOT catch the disc nor the can. Total = 2 points for throwing team
Throwing team knocks the can off by hitting the pole. Receiving team DOES catch the can AND the disc. Total = 0 points for throwing team
Throwing team knocks the can off by hitting the it directly on. A DINGER! But receiving team does catch the disc. 3 points for a DINGER, minus 1 for catching the disc. Total = 2 points for throwing team
Other Important Rules
Catcheable Throws – A disc has to be “catchable” for throwing team to receive a point for a missed catch. If not catchable, then no point is awarded. This includes throws made too low, too high or too hard. A collective decision is made if a disc is catchable. If you go for a disc and touch it, then it IS considered catchable.
Goaltending – The receiving team has to allow the frisbee to completely cross the plane of the pole before trying to catch it. If they touch it before it crosses the plane, it is considered “goaltending” and 2 points are awarded to the throwing team.
Taking Turns – Throwing team should alternate who throws. Anyone on the receiving team can catch.
A Drink In The Hand – This is an additional rule, but optional (younger kids, windy conditions, etc): you must have a drink in one hand while playing. You cannot use your drinking hand to help catch the disc. You can use any other part of your body to aid in catching the disc (i.e., trapping the disc to chest with catching hand).
Switching Sides – Teams switch sides when score reaches a multiple of 10, to provide fair advantage per conditions (sun, wind, etc).
